My mother was still in Russia, and so was he. So when he retired from teaching he taught sailing at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach. We had his memorial there near the water. We donated to the sailing center to get a boat named after him. First thing I thought of was to have a Salute to Sailor. We passed by the Catalina 37’s at the long dock of Long Beach Yacht Club all decorated out with their flags in honor. Then we came around the corner and saw this amazing site. Boats lining up giving a final farewell salute to my father as he, his boat, and the procession went by. Fourteen boats showed up, many the same boats he had raced on. My mother was still in Russia, and so was he. It was tough but he would have wanted us to race I called his skipper Mike Sego (skipper in the picture) and told him I wanted a black band on the boom; he went above and beyond making a mainsail sign “In Memory of Butch Macy.” My brother raced on the same boat as my father and can be seen in the photo standing up trimming spinnaker. So when he retired from teaching he taught sailing at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach. We had his memorial there near the water. We donated to the sailing center to get a boat named after him. A Cal 20 was fitting. Since his real name was Cal, everyone in racing knew him as “Butch”. First thing I thought of was to have a Salute to Sailor. We passed by the Catalina 37’s at the long dock of Long Beach Yacht Club all decorated out with their flags in honor. Then we came around the corner and saw this amazing site. Boats lining up giving a final farewell salute to my father as he, his boat, and the procession went by. Fourteen boats showed up, many the same boats he had raced on.
